Professor of Italian Language and Literature
Department of Italian Language and Literature
I am originally from Milano, Italy. I moved to the United States in 1980 and I started teaching at Smith in 1984. I find teaching Italian language and literature to be emotionally rewarding and intellectually stimulating. Teaching is very important to me, and I do not see it as separate from my research work.
I am very interested in language pedagogy and I enjoy exploring how new technology can help students to learn more effectively. Together with my colleague Vittoria Poletto I have developed a multimedia component for our language courses.
My literary research work has centered on modern Italian women writers; I have also continued to work on the theory and practice of translation. I think that it is very important for Italian scholars to make modern Italian texts available to the American public, that is why I have focused my attention on translating the works of Italian women writers, philosophers, and theorists.
