The Common Data Set Initiative is a collaborative effort between data providers in the higher education community. The combined goal of this collaboration is to improve the quality and accuracy of information provided to all involved in a student's transition into higher education, as well as to reduce the reporting burden on data providers. This goal has been attained by the development of a set of standards and definitions for a large number of higher education items.
The goal is the development of standard, clear questions and definitions and determination of the cohort to which each question relates; the goal is not development of a single survey instrument or universal set of survey questions. For more information on the CDS, visit the College Board, Peterson's, or U.S. News & World Report.
