Steven Goldstein

 

Steven Goldstein received his Ph.D. from Columbia University. Since 1968 he has been a member of the Government Department at Smith College. In 1998 he was named the Sophia Smith Professor of Government. He serves on the editorial board of The China Quarterly and The Journal of Contemporary China. He has, in addition, been a visiting faculty member at Columbia University and the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy. From 1983 to 1984 Goldstein was the Director of the China Council of the Asia Society. During the Tiananmen demonstrations in 1989 he was an on-camera commentator with CNN and CBS in Beijing. He appeared on camera again for CNN during Taiwan's 1996 presidential election.

He has written, co-authored or edited eight books and more than twenty articles. He was a writer and on-screen commentator for the PBS series "The Chinese." His research interest has been largely related to issues of Chinese domestic and foreign policy. Goldstein has published studies of Sino-American relations; Sino-Soviet relations; the emergence of a Chinese Communist view of world affairs and the reform process in post-Mao China. His current research focus is on the relations between the mainland and Taiwan as well as the evolution of U.S.-Taiwan relations. His most recent piece, "Terms of Engagement: Taiwan's Mainland Policy," appears in Alastair Iain Johnson and Robert Ross, Engaging China: The Management of an Emerging Power (Routledge, 1999).
