Interterm, also known
as January Term or J-Term, is the time between the end of
winter break and the beginning of spring semester, January
7 through January 26, 2008, when special courses and events
are planned. Smith students, faculty, staff and area residents
are invited to submit a proposal to teach a non-credit Interterm
course. Smith students are permitted to return to campus during
this time whether or not they are participating in Interterm
classes and events.
Please note
that College offices will be closed and no classes will be
held on January 21 in observance of Martin Luther King's birthday.
Do you want to teach an interterm course?
Go to the Interterm Course Proposal Instructions
page to learn how to submit a course proposal. Either
submit your proposal form on line or
download a form
to submit a hard copy.
What sorts of courses
are offered?
Some classes we have offered include videography, knitting,
fine arts, electron microscopy, Korean cooking, and mask making,
performance and auditioning.
How does a course get selected?
The Interterm Committee will select courses from among all
the proposals submitted. The committee looks for a diverse
mix of courses that are practical, provocative, timely, intellectual
or just plain fun. Courses normally run for ten hours, two
hours per day for five days, but can run longer and can be
configured to suit your schedule.
Are these courses offered for credit?
No credit is given for Interterm courses offered through this
program. For credit interterm courses, please refer to the
Interterm Section (p. 274) of the 2007-08 Course Catalogue.
All questions regarding credit courses should be directed
to the Registrar's
Office.
Do I get paid to teach
an Interterm course?
Students and faculty will be paid a stipend to teach.
Staff who teach a class not related to their regular staff
position will also be paid a stipend. To earn the
full stipend, the course must meet a minimum of ten hours
and have at least ten registered students. The stipend
will be prorated for fewer than ten hours, but will be cancelled
if fewer than ten students register.
How will information about Interterm offerings
be publicized?
A catalogue of non-credit Interterm courses and events will
be distributed to all students, staff and faculty the week
after Thanksgiving break. A course listing will also be available
on this Web site.
How do I register to take a course?
Registration will begin December 3, linked from this website.
Information on how to register for non-credit courses will
be in the catalogue of Interterm courses and on this web site.
An online registration form will be available on this web
site beginning December 3.
