2012 Preorientation
August 22–26, 2012
The International Students Preorientation (ISP) is a five-day program specially designed to welcome international students.
Please purchase your flight ticket to arrive at Smith on Wednesday, August 22, 2012, to Bradley International Airport (BDL-Hartford). Please do not arrive any earlier; houses will be closed.
Smith College has students from more than 60 countries. It is well known that the first few days and weeks on campus—especially a new country—can be overwhelming. The purpose of ISP, which begins several days prior to orientation, is to give international students a chance to recover from their long journeys, acquaint themselves with Smith and learn how to fully benefit from the United States educational system. ISP also provides entering international students an opportunity to get to know one another and discuss the upcoming excitement and challenges of college life here.
What Happens During ISP?
During ISP, a variety of workshops and recreational activities will be offered. Four days of workshops explaining academic and course requirements will be conducted by faculty and staff from various departments and by members of the International Students Organization (ISO). ISO students have attended the program themselves and can now help others adjust to the academic, cultural and social life at Smith. Several workshops will be devoted to the complicated issues of immigration laws, travel and work restrictions, the US banking system and tax regulations. In addition, students will have ample opportunity to meet with officials from Financial Aid, Health Services, Student Housing and other offices. Of course, we have also scheduled shopping trips, picnics, films, and other recreational activities such as receptions and special dinners to further introduce entering students to Smith, Northampton and the surrounding Five College area.
How Much Does ISP Cost?
It's free! The college covers the entire cost of ISP. Students pay no additional fees. Participants will stay in their own permanent houses. All meals, workshops, field trips and other expenses are funded by the Smith College International Students Office.
