The Office for International Students & Scholars promotes a diverse learning environment at Smith, provides essential services for international students and promotes cultural programs designed to integrate students within campus life. As part of the college's mission on diversity and global awareness, international students are engaged in the following:
- Interact with U.S. students in the classroom and in all other academic programs
- Learn to live and thrive in the college housing system
- Participate in student activities and programs on campus
In addition, the Office for International Students & Scholars encourages and assists international students in their leadership positions and provides support for their success. The office also acts as liaison and an advocate with governmental agencies and various college offices which work with international students and are responsible for maintaining their legal status while in the U.S.
During their sojourn at Smith College, international students learn:
- To navigate the complexities of American educational system
- Improve their English language acquisition and sharpen their communication skills
- Learn skills necessary for their future educational and career goals
