using images: guidelines
The Imaging Center Collections are to be used
for teaching and learning at Smith College only. Reproduction of copyrighted
slides, photographs, and digital images in any format, is regulated by
law and subject to prior agreement with the owner, publisher, or vendor
of the item. When using these images, it's your responsibility to observe
the rights of the copyright holders. For copyright information see the
source information with each image description.
- You may download or copy an image for a class paper.
- You may download or copy an image for a class/seminar/conference presentation.
- You may link to an image from Moodle.
- You may NOT download or copy an image to put on your (or any other) website.
- You may NOT download or copy an image for any other type of publishing, without gaining permission from the copyright holder. In most cases we have contact information should you need to contact the copyright holder.

Citations for Images of Works of Art
Citations to works of art should include the following information (or as
much of it as can be easily determined from the source) in addition to the
standard citation elements for the print or electronic source of the image
of the work:
artist's name, title of the work as given in the source, date, location of
the work if known (standard reference or note citation for the source publication).
Citations for Images downloaded from Image Databases
Citations to images included in image databases (ARTstor, Insight, Accunet/AP
Multimedia Archive, etc.), should include the following (or as much of it
as can be easily determined from the source):
creator's name, title of the work as given in the database, location of the
work, date (database and collection [if known]).
for example: Daniel Chester French, Angel Death Staying Hand Sculptor, Forest
Hills Cemetary, Boston, 1893 (ARTstor, The Image Gallery).
Citations for Images of Photographic Illustrations
Citations for photographic illustrations should include the following information
(or as much of it as can be easily determined from the source):
photographer's name, date of photo, and the name of the photo agency if given
(standard reference or note citation for the source publication).
The Smith INSIGHT Digital Image Database contains licensed images.
Users of these images must abide by the following license agreements.
AMICA Library License Agreement with Cartography Associates (abridged)
Permitted Uses: Access to and use of the AMICA Library and AMICA Works under this Agreement is exclusively for education, research, and scholarship. More specifically, in addition to and notwithstanding any privileged use set forth in the US Copyright Act, Licensed Users may receive access to and use the AMICA Library and AMICA Works for: (1) classroom instruction and related activities, (2) student assignments, (3) public display or public performance in a museum, gallery or similar facility, including use in exhibit labels and other components of the exhibit, (4) public display or public performance as part of a professional presentation at a seminar, conference, or workshop, or other such similar professional activity, (5) use in a student or faculty portfolio, including non-public, display thereof, if such use conforms to the customary and usual practice in the field; and (6) use in a dissertation, including reproductions of the dissertation for personal use and library deposit, if such use conforms to the customary and usual practice in the field. Licensed Users: Subscribers [Smith College] may designate categories of users that may recieve access to and use the AMICA Library under the terms of this Agreement. Faculty members, enrolled students, employees and researchers officially affiliated with the Subscriber may be Licensed Users. The following groups may not be Licensed Users: alumni,independent contractors, subscribers who pay fees to use facilities or services, tenants, and the members of the household of Licensed Users except when the Licensed Users are students enrolled in programs accredited by their governing jurisdiction to provide primary or secondary education.
Davis Art Slides
Davis Art Slides requires that you limit the use of its digital images to educational purposes via classroom projections and closed network study by on-campus users. Scholarly publication or use on public access web sites is not permitted. Permission must be obtained for uses beyond those stated.

a) Licensee [Smith College], including your faculty, staff and currently enrolled stuedents may use the Licensed Software to display and or print the corresponding graphic images without limitation for teaching and research purposes at the defined Site [Smith College] or at remote locations having electronic access to your Site(s).
b) This license includes permission to use the Licensed Software on a multi-user network at the defined Site and to permit remote access to a computer/server located at your Site. Simultaneous Display in multiple locations at or connected to the Site also is permitted.
c) You agree to employ reasonable security measures designed to limit access to your faculty, staff and currently enrolled students. |
