Founded in 1949 , the International Association of Physical Education & Sport for Girls and Women, IAPESGW, supports its members working for women's and girls' sport and physical education, and provides opportunities for professional development and international cooperation. IAPESGW, which has members in all five continents and more than 40 countries, holds Scientific Congresses every four years. The last conference was in 1997 in Lahti, Finland. The association also organizes a scientific programme every four years at Pre-Olympic Scientific Congresses. As a member organization of the International Council for Sports Sciences and Physical Education, IAPESGW helps to construct international policy and aid work in sport and physical education. IAPESGW has a representative on the International Working Group on Women & Sport, whose brief is to monitor and encourage implementation of the 1994 International Declaration on Women & Sport and the1998 Windhoek Call for Action. IAPESGW has a unique role in representing and furthering the interests of women and girls in sport and physical education at the international level during an exciting time. Many national organizations and international sports bodies endorsed the 1994 Brighton Declaration, and there are signs of greater commitment to women's sports by the International Olympic Committee. Since the fourth World United Nations Conference on Women in Beijing, there has been an increase in the interest of Non Governmental Organizations (NGO) in girls' physical activity and sport programs. IAPESGW participated in the 1998 International Conference on Women & Sport in Namibia, launching a dialog between leaders in women's global development and leaders in sport and physical education. IAPESGW wishes to continue and expand the discussion begun in Brighton, Beijing, and Windhoek at the 1999 Smith College conference.
