Physical
Education and Sport in a Global Context
Honoring the Legacy Charting the Future
|
The past 50 years have brought enormous changes for women in physical education and sport. The half century has also given rise to new and challenging opportunities. IAPESGW will mark its 50th anniversary with a conference to explore the role of sport and physical education in the global development of women. The conference will take place at Smith College, Northampton, Massachusetts (United States), from July 7-10, 1999. It will mark the 50th anniversary of the founding of IAPESGW by Dorothy Ainsworth, the organization's first president and the former director of physical education at Smith College. This will be an occasion to honor the legacy of past IAPESGW presidents and individual leaders who have contributed to IAPESGW's mission. In addition to celebrating our past, conference participants will envision the future by examining the role of education, and particularly physical education and sport, in international development. Leaders of non-sport organizations with programs aimed at improving women's health, status and access to social and political participation are invited and encouraged to submit presentations for the IAPESGW Conference. NGO's with programs in popular education, literacy, or legal and political rights will find the conference of great interest. |
