Strategies for Collaboration to Promote Sport and Physical Education

for Girls and Women in the Commonwealth

A gender equity model is important in developing health systems to address the differential health issues and needs of both mend and women. Measures to mainstream gender issues in the planning and management of health systems need to be taken through: Developing and strengthening policies to ensure equal rights and opportunities for all and for enhancing women's social status and leadership, Adopting gender sensitive approaches in the delivery of health services, Empowering women to protect and promote their own health as well as that of their families, Involving more women in community development,  Incorporating gender into training curricula for all health personnel, Undertaking gender awareness training for personnel at all levels and across sectors.
A gender sensitive framework for disease prevention and health promotion based on risk factors rather than focusing on specific disease prevention is needed. Inactivity is a key risk factor and should figure prominently in such a framework.

Strategies regarding women and health will be described. Some embryonic strategies will be considered in relation to physical activity, sport, and health mandate that has recently been agreed by Commonwealth Health Ministers, particularly in relation to health promotion activities.
