Competitive Opportunities for the Nigerian Athlete and Its Influence

                             on  Higher Performance Sustenance

                                 Gloria Obajimi, Nigeria

Nigerian athletes are naturally endowed with athletic talent.  Some of these talented individuals are exposed to competition opportunities at national, subregional, continental and world championships. Though, the competitions at the grassroots could be described as inadequate, the financial commitment from the government cannot sustain the system in its entirety. The recent entry of the inter-collegiate Foundation as a source for funds and exposing young children to healthy competition is a welcomed addition. This will help alleviate the problem of maintaining and keeping them longer within the confines of sport and competition.   The International - Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF) in collaboration with the Athletic Federation of Nigeria (AFN) recently embarked on establishing Nigeria as a sub-regional development center for women. This project is being sustained with financial grants remitted annually. This therefore, helps in the mobilization of talents and enhances competitive participation form the grassroots to the elite levels.
This paper will try to evaluate the progress achieved within the last three years by the IAAF grants on the propagation of female participation and emancipation in Nigeria. It will also highlight investments on competitive sport, the female gender and the socialization thereby achieved.
