The State and Student Perceptions of Good Physical Education Teachers

Nilza Magalhes Macario Co presenting with

Fernanda Barroso Beltro, Brazil

This study aims at analyzing the preparation of Physical Education, based upon evaluative results coming from established norms (the StateŐs perception) and prevalent significant statements (the studentŐs perception). The methodology adopted is the case study. A sample was taken from an evaluation of Universidade Castelo BrancoŐs faculty, especially the section related to the preparation of the Physical Education teachers.

The theoretical foundation came from a normative framework, which developed patterns of quality established by a Ministry of Education and SportŐs committee of specialists. Also, the study uses an opinion research among university students, focusing upon what is the meaning, for them, of the expression "good teacher" of Physical Education. The conclusions emerged from intersections of the StateŐs norms and the studentŐs qualitative statements.
The relevance of this study allows for a reflection about theoretical and practical issues related to the preparation of Physical Education teachers, as well as how the University might change its role in the re-orientation of the teacherŐs preparation, in spite of the "straight jackets" of the state.
