Nature-Based Sport and Women in a Global context: Differentiation and Equity in Adventure and Outdoor Experiential Learning

Barbara Humberstone, United Kingdom

This paper will explore theoretical and conceptual notions concerning gender and gender relations in modern society and how these are reflected or challenged in outdoor adventure and experiential learning. Differentiation for women and girls will be explored. The philosophies and practices currently prevalent in outdoor adventure in both European and Global contexts will be critically examines and a consideration for the ways in which they reinforce discrimination or provide opportunities for creating equality of experience will be made. This paper will draw upon collaborative research currently being undertaken by European women in nature-based adventure education.
