Sport Herstory of Women in Singapore

   This paper discusses the first phase of an international project to evaluate the beliefs, values, attitudes, and experiences of women in sport in distinct cultural settings in countries with different levels of promotion of women in sport. Singapore was chosen as the first nation in the project because it has made important strides towards providing sport for all and sport for life during three decades of nation building. Data was collected ion two stages In the first stage subjects were recruited from a representative range of groups associated with women's sport including the Association of Women for Action and Research, National Sports Associations and professions such as teaching. They completed completes a comprehensive questionnaire which surveyed participation, availability of resources, orientation to sport/ fitness/physical activity, psychological factors, socialization factors, employment status, attitudes, religion, barriers, leadership and values. The second stage involves interviewing respondents whom self-selected into either the participants or nonparticipants categories.
