Engineering
Jenin, Palestine

I knew two things: I wanted to study in the United States and I wanted to study engineering. Most girls at my town study to be teachers or nurses but not engineers. Two of my uncles are engineers. I wanted to be one, too.

Coming here meant adjusting to a new culture and a new country. The International Students Organization e-mailed me before I even arrived and then helped me when I got here. The International Students Organization and Muslim Student Organization became my family at Smith.

What I love most about Smith is the faculty. My professors are so supportive and inspire me to do my best. Last summer I worked as a research assistant with Professor Borjana Mikic, who has an engineering lab at Smith. I’m spending this June and July in a bioengineering lab at MIT. In August, I have an internship at a cancer center in Jordan. It is because of Smith that I was able to get these internships.
