Summer Employment
The Office of Human Resources accepts summer applications for a limited number of openings for summer employment in Facilities Management. All positions are full time (40 hours), Monday through Friday, with various shifts available. Types of available positions are outlined below.
Eligibility
Applicants must be Smith College undergraduate students or dependents of benefit-eligible Smith College employees. All applicants must be at least 16 years old by their first day of employment, returning to school full time in the fall to high school or undergraduate studies, and available to work through the end of August. Priority for filling positions is in the following order:
- Eligible returning workers from previous summer
- Smith College undergraduate students
- College-age dependents
- High-school-age dependents (seniors, juniors or sophomores)

Returning Workers
Returning workers will receive a questionnaire and do not need to complete an online application.
New Applicants
New applicants need to complete the Summer Application.
Once the summer application has been submitted, the applicant will receive a confirmation number on the screen. Each application will be reviewed for eligibility. If there are available vacancies after returning workers are hired, eligible applicants will be contacted by Facilities Management directly regarding their assignments. Eligible applicants who are not placed initially will be placed on a waitlist for potential openings.
Deadline
The deadline for applications is March 29, 2013, at 4:30 p.m.
Types of Available Positions
Clerical/Office
Duties include a variety of clerical functions such as filing, photocopying, reception, mail processing, word processing, data entry and operating general office equipment.
Grounds
Lawn mowing, raking, light trimming, general grounds maintenance throughout campus; other related duties. Some positions may require a valid driver's license.
Facilities/Building Services
Custodial duties related to cleaning and maintenance of academic buildings. Duties include washing windows, walls and woodwork; shampooing carpets, stripping and waxing floors; moving furniture, restocking supplies and basement/attic cleaning as needed; other related duties. Second-shift positions are also available.
Other
Other Facilities Management areas such as carpentry, garage, drafting, bookkeeping, may have some positions available.
Residential Services
Custodial duties related to cleaning and maintenance of residential buildings. Duties include cleaning in kitchens, dining rooms, student rooms and other residential living space; washing windows, walls, ceilings and woodwork; shampooing carpets, stripping and waxing floors; moving furniture, restocking supplies, and basement/attic cleaning as needed; other related duties.
