The Internal Transfer Process is designed to help achieve the college's goal of offering employees the opportunity for development and career advancement through internal mobility. In alliance with this goal, Smith strives to promote and create leadership opportunities for Smith staff and to maintain excellence through diversity.

How to Apply for an Open Position?

All positions are now posted on the Careers@Smith online employment system with a Posting Type of "Internal" for the first 5 business days beginning on a Friday and ending on the following Friday, Thereafter positions are moved to an "External" type, however internal candidates may apply at any time and retain their internal status.

Who is Eligible?

Eligible candidates include regular exempt, non-exempt, service and limited-term employees of the college, employed for 12 months or greater in their current position, with acceptable work performance (employees with documented performance concerns would not be eligible). Casual temporary and agency employees are not eligible as internal applicants.

What is the Process?

Once an Internal Application is submitted through Careers@Smith for an open position, the applicant will receive an online confirmation notice and number.

Each Internal Application will be reviewed for eligibility (job status, length of service, personnel issues) and minimum qualifications. Applicant's who are not eligible and/or not qualified for the position will be contacted by a Human Resources representative to explain why and to offer additional career development resources and assistance. Internal Applications that are eligible and qualified will be forwarded to the hiring manager for review.

Candidates whose application are reviewed by the hiring manager and not selected for an interview, or interviewed but not selected for the position, will be contacted by the hiring manager as a professional and community courtesy. Employees not hired may contact Human Resources for further coaching or career development.
