Daniel Brown specializes in Islamic intellectual history in the modern period, with particular reference to intellectual movements in the Indian Subcontinent and Egypt, and to the development of Islamic modernism. He is the author of Rethinking Tradition in Modern Islamic Thought and A New Introduction to Islam as well as articles on Islamic modernism, modern Muslim ideologies of martyrdom, and modern Muslim attitudes toward scripture. He has lived and studied in Pakistan and in Egypt.
