Stanley Elkins

Stanley Elkins is Sydenham Clark Parsons Professor Emeritus, United States.

Research and writing have centered on slavery in America and on the politics of the early national period. His first book Slavery: A Problem in American Institutional and Intellectual Life, published in 1959, and still in print, was reissued in three editions and received considerable national attention including a book edited by Ann Lane, entitled, The Debate Over Slavery, Stanley Elkins and His Critics . In 1993, his second book, co-authored with Eric McKitrick, The Age of Federalism, 1788-1800 , was published by Oxford University Press. It won the Bancroft Prize and the Order of Cincinnati Prize. He taught his first course on the history of Northamtpon and the close relationship between local and national history in 1993.
