Assistant Professor

 

Marnie S. Anderson specializes in the social and cultural history of modern Japan. She received her B.A. from Smith College and her M.A., Certificate in Women's Studies, and Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. She is currently working on a book manuscript that examines discourses about gender, citizenship, and the nation in late nineteenth-century Japan. Her most recent publication, "Kishida Toshiko and the Rise of the Female Speaker in Meiji Japan," appeared in the U.S.-Japan Women's Journal (2006). An article on status, gender, and political classification in Meiji Japan is forthcoming.

 

Her course offerings include three sequential surveys of Japanese history from ancient times to the present, a survey of modern East Asia, and specialized courses on gender in Japanese history, World War II in East Asia, social protest, and images of Japanese women.
