Welcome to our webpage. If you're a smoker, there is nothing better you can do for yourself health-wise, than quit! (So we're glad you "clicked on.")
Whether you have smoked for six months or twenty years, we have information and resources that can help you quit. If you don't smoke, but are concerned about a friend or loved one who smokes, we have strategies and hints that can help you reach out to that person.
There is a lot of good news for those who want to quit. After 24 hours of not smoking, carbon monoxide levels drop back to normal - which means 12% more oxygen in your blood stream (and more energy for you!). Nicotine levels in the body disappear within 3-7 days after the last cigarette. For women who smoke, the risk of cervical cancer decreases when you quit (smoking raises it). And you're back in the majority - since less than 25% of adults now smoke.
If you need some inspiration, check out the "Why Quit" info below. If you'd like some help and extra support - including finding out about pharmaceutical aids such as the nicotine patch and Zyban - take a look at our "Becoming a Former Smoker" resource sheet. We have also listed stress management techniques for those quitting, and hints about "How to Help a Friend."
If you can't find the information you need here, please call Health Services at x2824. And hang in there!!! Quitting may take some work, but it's very "doable" and immanently worthwhile!!!
