Accidents and Emergencies

  • On-Campus: Notify Public Safety (extension 800 for emergencies). Please consult with either Public Safety or Health Services before calling an ambulance.
  • Off-Campus: In the case of a serious accident or emergency, seek immediate care at the nearest medical facility, but ask the person accompanying you or the medical attendant to contact one of the following:
    • Director of Health Services, Dr. Jaffe
      (extension 2806)

  • After the accident or emergency: When you return to the college, report the situation to both the Director of Health Services (Dr. Jaffe) and the Associate Dean of Student Affairs in order to ensure insurance coverage and to be excused from missed academic work (when necessary). It is important to have the treating health care provider send a written report to Dr. Jaffe.

Absence Due to Illness

  • Illness During Examination Period: In order to receive consideration for a make-up examination, you must report to Health Services when missing or leaving an exam.
  • Incomplete Academic Work Due to Illness: Incomplete academic work resulting from absence due to illness will be excused only if you receive the prior approval of a Health Services provider. Before you return to Smith, remember to provide the Director of Health Services, Dr. Jaffe, with a written statement regarding your illness.

Please note: Health Services will not provide medical excuses or notes for missed classes due to illness.

Medical Insurance

All Smith College students are required to have medical insurance. A comprehensive brochure describing medical and mental health insurance coverage is available through Health Services and is mailed annually to students. Medical insurance coverage may be through:

  • Private medical insurance (a family policy)
  • College medical insurance
  • A combination of the two listed above

College Health Insurance: Students enrolled at Smith College in a degree program and taking at least 4 credits are eligible for coverage by the Student Medical Insurance Plan. Please refer to the subscriber brochure for detailed information about the health insurance offered by the college.

Private Insurance: Students who are not covered by the college health insurance may still use Health Services. There is no charge for the office visit, but students will be responsible for any ancillary charges. If desired, students may self-pay for confidential ancillary services. The college is not responsible for any charges not covered by private insurance.

Health Forms and Immunization Records

A completed Health Services entrance form (medical history and physical examination) and an up-to-date immunization record are required to use Health Services. Students who do not provide these documents will be unable to pre-register for classes.

Confidentiality of Information

All medical information and medical records related to any aspect of your health are considered confidential and will not be released to college administration and faculty without your consent.

If you are 18 years of age or older, medical records are also confidential from your parents. If you are younger than 18 years of age, confidentiality is maintained as protected by law (emancipated minors and reproductive health issues). Click here for the extended policy
