How to Help a Friend...

If you’re concerned about the well being of a housemate or friend, often it can be difficult to know just what to do or say. If your friend is open with you about a problem she’s experiencing, just being supportive and a “good listener” may be all that’s needed in the situation. Some other things friends can do is to... help brainstorm potential solutions to a problem... provide information about local resources…and educate yourself about the problem.

If the problem is more complex such as unsafe alcohol use, symptoms of depression, or a potential eating disorder, and you’re worried that your friend may be causing herself harm, the situation may call for outside support. One of the best ways you can be a friend is by knowing your limits and when to suggest that your friend seek professional help. (Also, the resources at the college are available not only for students experiencing difficulties, but also as a resource for students who are worried about another student or friend.)
