STRESS BUSTERS!

There’s no question about it - college life can be, and often is - stressful!

This holds true whether you’re a first year student trying to adjust to your new life away from home, a fourth year with the “senior jitters” about your MCAT exam or finding that “perfect” job, or anyone simply facing that ever-present college dilemma of trying to fit it all in…classes, studying, sports, work, friends…and still maintain your sanity!

But there are many things you can do to help “stress proof” yourself – such as eating well, getting regular exercise, and enough sleep. There are also many stress reduction techniques that can help you manage those unavoidable stressors, like your impending econ exam, money hassles, or a disagreement with a close friend. If you’re at the far end of the stress continuum and are feeling overwhelmed, depressed, or out of control, you can call the Smith Counseling Service (x2840)and book a confidential appointment with a counselor. This service is available to all Smith students, regardless of your type of insurance.

Of course, stress is not always bad. We need some stress to help motivate us to study, perform well, or just plain “get off of our butts.” We need to work toward our own optimal level of stress, but life doesn’t always corporate.

Below are some stress busters that you might find helpful. If you’re feeling stressed now, try out several of the stress management techniques. But when life simmers down a little, take some time to improve your “stress proof-ness,” so you’ll be in better shape when the next round of stressors come your way. And be sure to check out the “Pattern Planning/Time Management” information. It’s been said that “Time management IS stress management for college Students!”
