Director: Dr. Leslie R. Jaffe received his BA from Lafayette College and MD degree from New York University School of Medicine. Prior to coming to Smith College, Dr Jaffe was Associate Professor of Clinical Pediatrics and Director of the Adolescent Health Center of The Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York. There he developed his interest in women’s health and the interconnectedness of health with gender, culture, society, class and race. At Smith, Dr. Jaffe enjoys teaching a course on Women’s Medical Issues and, during the summer, teaching a health course to teenage girls as part of the Smith Summer Science and Engineering Program. Dr. Jaffe has been fortunate to become involved in the Five College Tibetan Studies Program and will be mentoring a Tibetan medicine student from Sarnath, India at Health Services during the spring 2009 semester. When not working, he enjoys spending time with his family, traveling, photography, video editing and (trying to) staying healthy by going to the gym daily.
Nursing Coordinator: Elaine Longley graduated from the University of Massachusetts with her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree in 1977. After graduating from nursing school Elaine taught Anatomy and Physiology and Maternal/Newborn Nursing for 3 years at Western Massachusetts Hospital School for Practical Nursing. From there, Elaine decided to go into clinical nursing and has worked as a pediatric nurse, a medical surgical nurse, a telemetry nurse, and an ICU/CCU nurse. Smith College Health Services has been her “home” for the last 21 years and this is the job that she has found to be the most stimulating, allowing her to use her nursing skills to their fullest while also continuing to be a “teacher” in helping students understand their health care needs. When not working at Smith, she enjoys her family time, her home, quilting with friends, volunteer work, and during the summer months golfing. There’s nothing like a warm summer day out on the course whether you are hitting them well or not.
Nurse Practitioner: Premila Nair received her BA in English, History and Political Science from the National University of Singapore, her Master of Science degree in Nursing from Pace University, and post-Master’s certification as a Nurse Practitioner from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. She came to health care after a career as a refugee advocate and teacher. Refugee work in the Sudan, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand and Costa Rica gave her firsthand experience with the profound impact health care providers could have on the wellbeing of individuals and families and led to her change in career path. Prior to college health, she was a National Health Service scholar and served in an inner city community health center. She continues those ties by filling in as a volunteer medical provider in a local Survival Center. She maintains a strong professional interest in health care for the underserved and traditionally marginalized groups (including refugee and immigrant populations) particularly as they relate to issues of women’s health and accessibility to services. When not at work she enjoys her family of two amazing daughters and exploring as much of the world as she can (6 continents, 23 countries, and counting….).
Nurse Practitioner: Deirdre Richardson graduated from Harvard & Radcliffe Colleges and received a Master’s of Science in Nursing from the MGH Institute of Health Professions in Boston. After receiving a National Health Services grant to work in an underserved community, she came to work in Springfield, Massachusetts at a community health center. Both academically and professionally she has engaged in a wide range of women’s issues including producing two film festivals on women of color and gays and lesbians, working with incarcerated women at Framingham women’s prison and at the Ludlow county jail, and counseling adolescent girls at a residential treatment program in Arlington, Mass. In graduate school, she focused on adult and women’s health writing her thesis on barriers to health care for African American women. She brings all of these interests to Smith College and seeks to develop more in this diverse community of women. Outside of her career, she enjoys being active in local and national politics, going to museums, gardening and trying to keep up with her preschool daughter, Sadie.
Nurse: Tanya Griswold graduated from Greenfield Community Colleges License Practical Nursing Program in 2000. She worked part time in long term care and in a variety of medical practices. Tanya continued her studies at G.C.C. while working part time and while raising a family. In 2006 she earned her associates in science is now practicing as a Registered Nurse. When not at work Tanya enjoys spending time with family and friends. She loves gardening and going to Cape Cod in the summer and she downhill skis in the winter which helps her tolerate the cold New England weather. |
Holly Dinnie MLT, ASCP is a Medical Laboratory Technologist. She performs a variety of lab functions including Hematology, Immunology and Microbiology testing, as well as various duties necessary to maintain an accredited laboratory.
Prior to joining Smith College, she was a Reproductive Biologist at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, MA. Performing In Vitro Fertilization techniques, she was able to assist those unable to achieve pregnancy. She has also worked as a Medical Lab Tech at Yoon Laboratory in Enfield, CT and at Baystate Medical Center. Holly earned her B.A. at Western New England College as well as her A.S. at Springfield Technical Community College in Springfield, MA. She also attended the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, where she was the recipient of the Chancellor’s Talent Scholarship. At the same time, she pursued her passion for dance by performing with The Hartford Ballet. When not at work, Holly enjoys spending time with her family, taking walks, attending her children’s sporting events, and going to the ballet.
Registered Dietitian: Kelly Stellato M.S., R.D., L.D.N., C.L.C. Kelly graduated form the University of Massachusetts with a B.S. in Human Nutrition. She went on to Clayton College and the University of Northern Colorado to obtain a M.S. in Nutrition and complete a dietetic internship. Kelly is currently pursuing a second masters degree in Psychological Studies and is interested in the psycho-social aspects of food choices and eating behaviors. In addition to being an R.D., Kelly is also a Certified Personal Trainer, Certified Lactation Counselor, and holds certificates in yoga, t'ai chi, strength training and pre/postnatal exercise instruction. When not working, she enjoys her family time, her home, practicing yoga, doing creative arts, playing with her ferrets and being outdoors. Camping and weekend trips keep her refreshed and recharged so that she can be passionate about her work.
