In founding the college more than 130 years ago, Sophia
Smith wrote that the college would provide "studies as coming times may develop or demand
for the education of women." In keeping with Sophia Smith's desire to adapt to changing
times, the college recognizes that sustainability and its economic, social and
environmental components have become important concerns that affect us on all levels:
local, regional, national and global.
Providing an education that emphasizes social, cultural, and environmental
leadership requires that Smith College serve as both an educator and role model
in helping its students become socially and environmentally responsible citizens. Therefore,
Smith will strive to promote sustainable actions by students, faculty and the administration
that reflect an awareness of the earth's ecosystems, social justice, natural resource consumption
and community health.
