Regardless of their major, today’s students will live and
work in a world that must address sustainability: the ability to achieve economic prosperity
and a decent quality of life for the people of our planet while protecting the natural systems
on which we all depend for our basic needs.
As the director of Smith’s Picker Engineering Program has
noted, sustainability is not optional; it’s essential. Smith is focusing on issues of sustainability
across disciplines. Faculty teach and mentor students in independent and team projects which
require creative solutions that assess environmental impact, social policy, and economic interests,
as well as functionality.
