Can men apply to this program?
Yes! Anyone with a bachelor's degree or its equivalent may apply to the ESS Graduate Program.
Is the stipend payment for being an assistant coach?
No, as part of being in the program every student is assigned to be an assistant coach in his or her sport. The assignment is treated as any class (ESS 505/506). The student registers, is graded by the head coach, and receives credit toward his or her degree.
What is the fellowship for?
The fellowship is a full tuition waiver along with a stipend of approximately $12,090 in exchange for service to the college above and beyond your classroom and coaching responsibilities. This service can be either teaching performance classes, assisting in the Olin Fitness Center or administrative work for the Exercise & Sport Studies or athletic departments.
What is "Preview Day" about?
Preview Day is a chance for you to visit the campus and get a better sense of the program through panel discussions and talking to faculty and coaches. Time slots are set aside during the day for visitors to interview with department members and coaches as part of the application process. Preregistration is required by contacting Michelle Finley at mfinley@smith.edu
Is it necessary to come to campus to interview?
It is not necessary to visit campus for an interview, but it is strongly recommended. Other possibilities for applicants living a great distance from campus is an interview via telephone or Skype. Some form of interview is required for those applying for a fellowship.
Is the GRE test score required for admission?
Yes. The GRE is required for U.S. applicants. International applicants must submit TOEFL results.
Who should my three letters of recommendation be from? Should the envelopes be sealed and can I submit them with my application?
Your three letters of recommendation should include one sport related, from a coach or employer. The letters must be hard copies with original signatures and in a sealed envelope. They may be submitted with your application or sent to the college directly from your recommender. They must be received before the application deadline.
When is the deadline for applying?
All required materials must be received by the Graduate & Special Programs Office at Smith College BEFORE January 15 (if you are applying for any financial aid). If no financial aid is needed, the application deadline is April 1.
Can I enter the program in the spring?
No, our courses are on a set program schedule. We only accept new students entering for the fall semester.
My undergraduate degree is not in a science field. Can I still apply?
Yes, we accept applications even if you don't have a science background. It is not required that you take prerequisite courses. All accepted students with no science background will be required to take ESS 175 Applied Exercise Science during the first semester in the program. This class will give you the necessary science knowledge to be successful in the program.
