Fellows earn a competitive stipend for their service to the department and college.
A tuition waiver for up to four courses a semester is also granted. Fellowships are
renewed for second year candidates who have provided satisfactory service, and successfully
completed their academic work during their first year.
Forms for applying for fellowships are included in the application materials.
Teaching Fellows
Teaching fellowships are awarded to
individuals who have superior undergraduate academic records, and who have expertise
in teaching undergraduate exercise and performance related classes. Normally, teaching fellows are assigned to teach four courses per
year (two each semester).
Administrative Fellows
Fellowships for candidates with
particular interest in administrative or departmentally related work are awarded
as well. These candidates have met the qualification of superior academic records,
but also have expressed interest or expertise in working in more administrative capacities.
These fellows are expected to contribute at least 10 hours weekly to their duties.
Scholarships are awarded to individuals who have excellent undergraduate records,
and who can demonstrate financial need. Individuals who do not apply for fellowships,
or who have applied, but were not awarded one may receive scholarship aid. Awards
offset a portion of tuition. Second year candidates normally receive about the same
percentage of scholarship aid as they did during their first year provided that they
have demonstrated satisfactory progress in the program. Individuals applying for
scholarships must submit a standard financial aid form that is included in the application
materials. The deadline for applying for scholarship aid is January 15.
Loans are administered by the Student Financial Services. Federal William D. Ford
Direct Loans may be included in aid offered to graduate candidates on admission. Applicants
for loans must meet all federal guidelines and must agree to begin monthly payments
on loans soon after completion of their work at Smith College.
Applications for loans received by February 15 will be given top priority. The processing
of later applications will be delayed.
