The
Department of Dance offers a two-year program of specialized training for candidates
who have strong ability and interest in pursuing dance at the graduate level. Choreography
and performance are the focus of the program with additional work in production,
study of history and literature of dance, and scientific principles applied to the
teaching and performance of dance. All M.F.A. students are also Teaching Fellows and teach
the equivalent of three studio courses at the undergraduate level each year. To count toward
the degree, all work must earn a grade of at least B-, but the degree will not be awarded
to a student who has no grade above this minimum. The thesis requires a public presentation
of original choreography along with supporting production elements and a paper in support
of the work.
Interested students may consult the Department of Dance, Berenson Studio, Smith College,
Northampton, Massachusetts 01063; phone (413) 585-3232.
