Requirements for the Major in German Studies

 

Advisers: For the class of 2005, Judith Keyler-Mayer; for the class of 2006, Gertraud Gutzmann; for the class of 2007, Joseph McVeigh.
Adviser for Study Abroad: Joseph McVeigh.

Basis: German 200

Requirements: Nine (9) courses above the basis, of which at least six (6) must be selected from the following:

GER 221 Conversation and Composition
GER 222 Topics in German Culture and Civilization (may be repeated with a different topic)
GER 340 Advanced Composition, Conversation and Style
GER 351 Advanced Topics in German Studies (may be repeated with a different topic)


COURSES OFFERED IN GERMAN IN HAMBURG (see below):

GER 270 German History and Culture from 1871 to 1945
GER 280 Theater in Hamburg: Topics and Trends in Contemporary German Theater
GER 290 Studies in Language II
GER 310 Studies in Language III
GER 320 Germany 1945-1990: Politics, Society and Culture in the Two German States


COURSES IN ENGLISH OFFERED AT SMITH

Up to three (3) English-language courses may be taken from among the following:

GER 227 Topics in German Studies (may be repeated with a different topic)
GER 230 Topics in German Cinema (may be repeated with a different topic)
GER 250 Jews in German Culture
Any CLT course taught by faculty of the Department of German Studies

Of the courses for the major, one must be from the pre-nineteenth century, one from the nineteenth century, and one from the twentieth century. The period requirement may, with departmental approval, be fulfilled with courses outside the Department of German Studies, for example in history, art history, music history, government, and philosophy.


Courses taken at the University of Hamburg during the Junior Year Abroad will be numbered differently and will be considered equivalent to (and upon occasion can be substituted for) required courses offered on the Smith campus, subject to the approval of the department.


Honors

Director: Joseph McVeigh

GER 430: Thesis

8 credits

Full-year course; Offered each year

Requirements: the same as for the Major, with the addition of a thesis, to be written over the course of two semesters, and an oral examination in the general area of the thesis. The topic of specialization should be chosen in consultation with the director of honors during the junior year or at the beginning of the senior year.
