Joel Westerdale studied German and philosophy at the Universities of Michigan, Freiburg and Munich, at the Humboldt University in Berlin and at Middlebury College, before earning his doctoral degree in Germanic Languages and Literatures from Harvard University. His research interests are reflected in his teaching. Beyond the full spectrum of German language courses, he has taught courses on Nietzsche, Freud, and the Jahrhundertwende, as well as on German film, post-Wall literature, and evil in modern German culture. He has been awarded fellowships by the Whiting and Fulbright Foundations, the German Studies Association, and the Center for European Studies in Cambridge, and is presently completing a book manuscript on the challenge of Nietzsche’s writing called Nietzsche’s Aphoristic Dynamite.
