Student Fellowships Page

Smith College is ranked as one of the top institutions nationally in the number of Fulbright Fellowships awarded to its students each year. In 2007-08 there were 17 Smith students (out of 32 Smith applicants) who were awarded a Fulbright Fellowship to study or teach abroad. Of the 32 Smith students who applied for a Fulbright, 23 were finalists and 17 were awarded fellowships. The German Studies Department is exceptionally proud of having been an integral part of Smith's success in this area. Of the 17 students awarded Fulbright Fellowships in 2007-2008, five of them (about 30%) came from the German Studies Department. And four of the five fellowship recipients from the department had also studied abroad with Smith College's program in Hamburg, Germany. But this success is not just a recent phenomenon and not just limited to Fulbright Fellowships! Our students are also regularly awarded prestigious fellowships such as DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) Research Fellowships and Undergraduate Fellowships as well as Calkins Fellowships in the sciences. The German Studies Department and the Smith College Study Abroad Program in Hamburg, Germany have been instrumental in helping students achieve success in the competition for fellowships for many years.
