Landscape Update: April 24, 2014

Mountain Laurel Grove
Lanning Fountain area

Mountain Laurel Grove

The old mountain laurel (Kalmia latifolia) grove east of the Lanning Fountain will undergo a severe cutback this spring to try to renew the failing plants.

At one point, this area of campus was shaded by many trees and the laurel enjoyed the understory shade. Now in full sun, they are not adapting well and are reaching the age where they would normally begin to decline.

We hope that cutting them back severly will renew them and induce dense new growth. If this experiment fails we will replant the area with a more sun-tolerant species.
