THE LEWIS AND CLARK EXPEDITION spent the winter of 1804-05 at Fort Mandan, in North Dakota. In the spring the captains sent a large shipment down the Missouri to St. Louis, addressed to President Thomas Jefferson in Washington. They enclosed journals, field notes, and maps; astronomical observations, ethnographic information, a “statement of rivers, creeks, and most remarkable places”; boxes containing animals’ skins and bones; samples of minerals; and cages with four live magpies and a prairie dog. Box four contained over sixty plant specimens, including bur oak and coneflower.
