Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew
London, England
Every summer since 1994 two Smith College students have worked as interns at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, England, in molecular biology and conservation genetics. Both learn state-of-the-art scientific techniques and meet noted scientists from around the world. Both student interns have the opportunity to be co-authors on scientific publications resulting from their research. See List of Publications .
Applications are due in the Botanic Garden office by December 21 (see information below on the application process) . Applicant information is faxed to Kew, where scientists select the two students best suited to their summer projects. Once selected, these students apply for funding from various campus sources including, but not limited to, Clark Science Center summer internships (mid-February deadlines), Praxis, and the Smith Student Aid Society. In past years, a stipend of $3,400 per student was successfully obtained by Kew interns who applied for summer internship money made available by the Science Center. The College has a limited number of these stipends, which are competitive in nature. Funding for student airline travel to England comes from an endowment established in honor of Muriel Kohn Pokross '34.
Kew scientists expect a full 10 weeks of work from each intern. The usual cost for each student is living expenses of $250 per week for these 10 weeks. Travel plans and lodging for Kew interns are handled by a representative from the Botanic Garden Visiting Committee, currently Dr. Lisa Baird '76, Professor of Biology at UC San Diego. This same representative also assists with setting up e-mail accounts for the students at Kew and corresponds with them as they conduct their research.
