“I remember so clearly my mother’s strong and independent character and leadership qualities as well as her great generosity. Those memories reinforced my desire to honor her by adding to the fund which she had begun in her father’s memory so many years before.” Sally McDermott ’56

Remembering the Past ~ Securing the Future
When Sarah “Sally” Schemm McDermott ’56 entered Smith in 1952, she already appreciated education for women. Her grandfather, Luman Goodenough, an attorney and education advocate, had served as a trustee of the Kingswood School for Girls and had always encouraged girls and women to think for themselves. Both Sally and her mother, Bettie Goodenough Schemm, Smith Class of 1929, had graduated from Emma Willard, so it was no surprise that they both attended Smith as well.
In 1958 Sally’s mother established the Luman Webster Goodenough Scholarship Fund in memory of her father who was “greatly interested in education, especially the education of women.”
As Sally approached her 35th reunion, she wanted to augment her grandfather’s scholarship fund and was also looking to her own retirement years. At that time she funded a deferred payment gift annuity that would begin paying her income at a future date. This type of gift allows alumnae to make a gift now and reserve a future stream of income at an appealing rate.
Pleased with how that gift worked out, Sally wanted to repeat it for her 50th Reunion. In anticipation of that milestone, Sally decided to fund another charitable gift annuity that would bring her income immediately without deferral. These streams of income have allowed Sally to be generous to Smith, and she has earmarked both gifts to enhance the Goodenough Scholarship Fund after her death.
