NY City Commission on Human Rights, New York At the Commission, I spent a lot of time researching and reading the general text pertaining to the New York City Human Rights Law. Once I got an understanding of the law and how the Commission provided assistance to individuals who sought to protect their rights, I was able to sit in on intakes with various staff attorneys and human rights specialists. After some time, I was given the opportunity to review case files and I was responsible for writing 2-3 page case summaries for the Commission. By going through these files, I was able to get a better understanding of the law and how the Commission, as a nonpartisan party, represented the interests of the people of New York City. The highlights of my internship would probably be when I was able to review case files and writing case summaries. They gave me a big sense of accomplishment. In addition, a number of lawyers in the office offered to take me to outside events hosted by numerous law firms and organizations in New York City. I attended a Mayoral Campaign Forum at the Yale Club in New York City and happened to meet Mayor Bloomberg. Although this was not directly related to my internship, this excursion definitely provided me with a memorable moment. This internship was extremely beneficial to me in regard to my future career goals. I used to be pretty set in my ways thinking that I was definitely going to go to law school and become a public interest lawyer. However, after spending time at the Commission, I've come to the conclusion that this may not be the best profession for me. I am still incredibly interested in their work, but I'm not sure of what I want to do in the future. < Previous |
