Smith students expect and welcome the personal
and educational benefits of an international student population. In the laboratories,
over dinner, on trips to town or to faculty and friends' homes, they share perspectives
on life in their own culture and living in the United States. This sharing of ideas
and aspirations is part of Smith's tradition of valuing international exchange for
its own sake and as preparation for life, especially in a world where international
relations have become so necessary.
From
President Neilson welcoming intellectual émigrés in the 1930s, to
the thousands of students who have traveled through Study Abroad, the American Studies
program that has received so many faculty from other nations, the growing number
of our alumnae who reside outside the U.S. or the many nations represented in the
current student body, Smith mirrors both the past and the future in its emphasis
on learning and understanding other nations and cultures.
