Three factors have a major impact on Smith's ability to maintain faculty excellence: the national phenomenon of numerous retirements as the Baby Boomer generation ages; an increasingly competitive market for talented faculty; and the growth of relatively new disciplines, particularly in the sciences and engineering.
Nearly a third of Smith's faculty will retire over the next decade, a situation that presents both an opportunity and a challenge. While an attritional shift in faculty allows for a re-evaluation of the curriculum, it also demands that Smith remain competitive with numerous other institutions in the salaries and resources it offers new educators.
The growth of Smith's endowment, effective long-range planning, and the caliber of students the college attracts are all important factors in hiring and retaining the best faculty.
