The
Brown Fine Arts Center, Neilson Library, the Botanic Garden, the Sophia Smith Collection
of Women's History, and the Mortimer Rare Book Room are the most visible aspects
of collections that immeasurably enrich a Smith education. In an age of massive and
often ephemeral information, Smith students respond to a woman's letter penned more
than a century ago, a stone tablet that has traveled more than a thousand years to
this place, an artist's ability to capture an idea in color and form, a plant that
blossoms perhaps once in an individual's lifetime.
Thanks to support from the recent comprehensive campaign,
the most pressing physical needs of Smith's collections have been addressed. Problems
of space, excessive moisture, and safety issues have been addressed.
Now, continued
health of the collections requires additional permanent support for conservation,
acquisitions, and exhibitions to support the curriculum so that these resources continue
to add insight, beauty, and wonder to the Smith experience.
