Foundations, whether private or corporate,
have always played a part in supporting Smith. Today, participation in independent
research, curriculum-based projects, internships, and external networks are essential
to an undergraduate education, and it is corporate and foundation support that complements
alumnae gifts to make these resources possible.
For example, the Picker Engineering Program has benefited
from founding gifts from Harvey Picker, in honor of Jeanne Sovatkin Picker '42 and
Rosemary Bradford Hewlett '40, combined with the funding from Ford Motor Company
Fund, GE Foundation, Hewlett Packard, Bechtel, and numerous other sources. Independent
research opportunities are supported by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. International
students come to Smith with the support of the Coulter Foundation.
These and many other educational opportunities made
possible by grants may be seen in detail on Smith's Corporate
and Foundation Relations pages.
