EXTENDING LEARNING BEYOND THE CLASSROOM

A rigorous education includes many types of learning experiences: faculty-student research opportunities, leadership of campus organizations, responsibilities for residence life activities, volunteer work in local communities, participation in regional and club sports, and internships that range from studying coral reefs to learning international banking.

With support from alumnae, parents, and friends, Smith provides such experiences to all students through innovative programs.

Danielle Leba '08Smith is the first college to provide access to a supported internship opportunity for all students through its Praxis program and has pioneered in equipping students for responsible fiscal management through the Women and Financial Independence program.

The Lewis Leadership Program, an intensive series of courses and projects, trains participants in research, management skills, team leadership, and the professional presentation of ideas.

To promote civil discourse, faculty, students and staff are involved in listening, learning, and discovering the skills everyone needs to engage in constructive debate in classrooms and in daily life.

Together with resources such as the Poetry Center and a planned building for the sciences and engineering, the college enters the 21st century continuing to support its mission of providing the finest possible education for women.
