Smith believes that every student must develop the ability to think critically and analytically; convey ideas clearly in oral, written and visual form; know and apply quantitative skills; understand and apply scientific reasoning; engage with artistic creation and expression; and be able to work both independently and collaboratively.
As global citizens, today’s students must also develop an historical context and perspective with which to assess events; learn a foreign language; and engage with communities beyond Smith, through study and service.
In all their actions, Smith students should learn to value tolerance and diversity, applying moral and ethical reasoning to their impact on other people and the environment.
Over the course of a student’s four years, these capacities will be developed through independent studies and research with faculty; honors theses; community-based research; seminars and international fieldwork; and increased opportunities for collaboration among departments and presentation of work accomplished.
