The number of students now pursuing studies in the sciences and engineering, changes in teaching that require more research and collaboration, and safety requirements for laboratory spaces all dictated expansion of Smith’s facilities.
Ford Hall, the first new building for the sciences and engineering, is designed to support and facilitate teaching that crosses the boundaries of traditional disciplines and models the collaboration essential in research and working life today. The $73 million, 140,000-square-foot facility at Green Street and Belmont Avenue will accommodate engineering, computer science, molecular biology, chemistry and biochemistry. It is supported by a $10 million leadership gift from Ford Motor Company.
