Christiane Métral, a dual citizen of France and Switzerland, began teaching at Smith in 1996. Her focus is foreign language pedagogy and cross-cultural communication. She earned a Master 2 Sciences du Langage in Français Langue Etrangere with the Université Stendhal, Grenoble and holds a Maîtrise universitaire/Master of Arts from the Université de Genève in Switzerland. She also received a certification as an oral proficiency examiner through the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL).
Métral teaches French language courses at all levels, a literature course and the January term immersion course in French oral expression. She co-directed the Smith Program Abroad in Geneva in 2004-2005.
A fervent advocate of integrating emerging technology in language teaching, she has been involved in several blended learning initiatives. Currently, she is working with Hélène Visentin and Marie-Madeleine Charlier (Associate Director, Smith Programs Abroad, Paris) on an online platform targeted toward students heading to study in Paris, France. The newly revamped web-based applications she redesigned for the three-week immersion course on oral expression provide a flipped classroom environment for more interactive learning. She taught "Skyping with the French" for several years, a course with a cross-cultural focus which connects Smith students with students from a grande école in Paris for weekly Skype conversations.
