Smith College awards need-based aid to non-U.S. citizens, both first year and September transfer applicants. Please note: International transfer students who are applying for need-based aid may not apply for January entrance. The pool of international students is highly competitive and the level of support provided from the college ranges widely, depending on particular family circumstances. Aid is determined based on the information provided by the family on the Financial Aid Application, along with tax or income statements.
A non-U.S. citizen (Canadian citizens excepted) eligible for aid is offered a grant award in the first year that will remain at the same level for her sophomore and junior years. In her senior year, any increase in tuition and fees that is not covered by an increased awarded loan amount will be covered by an increase in the grant, so that her family contribution will remain the same as it was in her junior year. (Loan and campus job amounts, which are part of the total aid package, will increase each year to partially offset increases in billed expenses.) Cost increases not covered by aid increases are the responsibility of the student and her family.
U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and Canadian residents must reapply for aid each year.
Apply for financial aid by the deadlines to qualify. Do not wait to be admitted to the College before applying for aid. International applicants to the College who do not apply for aid prior to admission are not eligible to receive institutional aid from Smith at any time.
