Smith College awards
campus employment as part of the standard financial aid packaging policy.
All Smith students who have been awarded work-study must be given the opportunity
to work on campus. This is why the College reserves the right to limit
the hours a student can work each week and the number of campus jobs she
can hold. The limitation of one primary job per student is to insure
equity and opportunity for all work-study students. Normally, earnings
from on-campus jobs during the academic year, including breaks and interterm,
are counted as part of the work-study limit.
There are some special
issues that are of concern to international students. For example, Federal
law limits the hours an international student can work to 20 hours per
week. Also, international students cannot obtain work off-campus. In recognition
of these issues, the College may allow international students to work during
interterm without having those hours count toward the work-study award.
Students who wish to work increased hours during interterm must consult
with the Coordinator for Student Employment (Valerie Schumacher, Rm 1 College
Hall / vschumac@smith.edu for approval.
First year international
students are limited to an average of 8 hours per week during the fall
and spring semesters. Sophomore, junior and senior international students
who feel that they need to work more than 8-10 hours per week during the
fall and spring semesters should consult with the Student Employment Coordinator.
If extenuating circumstances exist and the student is in good academic
standing, then additional hours may be approved. This decision will be
made after consultation with the Dean for International Students.
To request consideration
for increased hours, the student must submit the Work Study Appeal form
to the Student Employment Coordinator. The form will request
information about the reasons for needing to work more than the standard
number of hours. Students requesting more hours for the purpose of
paying the family contribution toward billed fees will be required to set
up a payroll deduction plan if the request is approved.
