INSTITUTIONAL AID

Need-Based Aid

Smith's resources for financial aid include grants, campus jobs, and loans. A student's financial aid package will include one or more of these. A loan and a job (considered self-help) are usually the first components of an aid package; remaining need is met with grant aid. The ratio of self-help to grant will increase as you progress toward your degree.

Grants are funds given to students with no requirement of repayment or work time in exchange. Most Smith College grants come from funds given for this purpose by alumnae and friends of the college and by foundations and corporations. The federal and state governments also provide assistance through need-based grants, such as Federal Pell Grants and state scholarships. Smith receives an allocation each year for Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants and for state-funded Gilbert Grants for Massachusetts residents.

Smith Grants: College grants are donated by alumnae, foundations, and friends of the college. You may be asked to write to the donor of the fund if your grant is supplied by a Smith alumnae club or named scholarship.

Merit Aid

Smith College has some limited merit aid programs, including the Zollman Scholarship, STRIDE Scholarship, and the Mary Maples Dunn Scholarhip.

Dora Windes Zollman Scholarships, the college's highest academic scholarships, are awarded to fewer than ten first-year students based on their exceptional promise for Smith. The scholarship is equal to half the cost of tuition. Zollman scholars are also invited to participate in the STRIDE paid research program.

STRIDE Scholarships offer students with outstanding academic and personal qualifications a close working relationship with a faculty member during their first two years at Smith College. This scholarship of $2500 per year for four years is awarded to approximately 35-40 students per year. In addition to the scholarship, students are also given an annual stipend of $1700 per year for two years that is linked to paid research with faculty members.

Mary Maples Dunn Scholars are selected on the basis of academic merit and potential for leadership at Smith. The award is $3000 annually.

College Loans

Smith College Loans are made available through private funds administered by Smith College. These funds are limited and loans are awarded at the discretion of the Student Financial Services staff.

Interest Rate: Eight percent (8%) beginning six months after you graduate, withdraw or drop below half-time enrollment. Interest can be deferred if you enroll at least half-time in graduate school.

Disbursement: The College Loan is disbursed in two equal payments to the school after you sign a promissory note.

Repayment: Repayment begins six months after you graduate, withdraw or drop below half-time enrollment. The minimum monthly payment is $50.

Campus Employment

A job opportunity may be part of your financial aid package. College policy permits first year students to work only for Dining Services in the various kitchens, the Smith College Club, the Campus Center, and Catering, doing housekeeping in the houses, and/or taking part in the America Reads/America Counts Tutoring Program. The College holds a Job Fair shortly after students' arrival in the fall offering opportunities to sign up for all of these positions. This makes locating a job for the first year student easy and efficient in their first days at school and allows them the chance to settle in to campus life without the added stress of competing with upperclass students for jobs. Please refer to the Work-Study Information for First Year Students section of the website..

Students are paid every 2 weeks during the academic year and the base pay rate is $7.25 per hour for on-campus ($7.75 per hour for Off-Campus Work-Study and America Reads/Counts Tutoring). Students participating in domestic exchange programs are expected to arrange work at the host institution.
