Guide to Award Letters

BILLING

Student Financial Services will send you a statement each month in which there is activity on your account. You can monitor your student account on BannerWeb at www.smith.edu (click on BannerWeb Log-in in lower right-hand corner of the Smith homepage). Accompanying the July statement is an informational letter detailing Smith College’s payment policy. If you pay any balance not covered by financial aid, you will avoid having late fees posted to your account.

Smith aid offered in this letter should show as a credit on your student account. Loans as well as federal and state funded aid will show as pending credits until you have completed all required processing and the funds are disbursed to the college. Note: Pending credits will expire for the fall on November 6th and for the spring on February 6th. You will then be charged late fees on that portion of your student account. If you have a legitimate reason for delay in processing, it is your responsibility to notify Student Financial Services.

Work opportunity authorized in your award does NOT show as a pending credit or credit on your student account. If you choose to use all or part of your earnings towards your bill, you must complete a payroll deduction form through Student Financial Services when you arrive on campus.

If you have any questions about your student account, or if the aid on your student account does not match with the aid on your financial aid award, contact Student Financial Services (413-585-2530) or e-mail us at sfs@smith.edu.

Smith grant funding is available only for the room portion of the charge for transient housing. Students may participate in the full or partial board plans, or no board plan. Regardless of which plan you choose, you will be responsible for meeting the costs of additional food from your resources, whether in Northampton or at home. In some cases, this expense may be covered by increased student loan eligibility.

Grant aid for transient housing will be available only to women whose travel time would normally be 45 minutes or longer. Any student excluded by this limitation may apply for transient housing on a space available basis, but the cost will not be covered by grant aid. Any appeals to this restriction will be considered by your Class Dean.

Students who receive Smith grant aid and who take instrumental or vocal music for credit will receive additional grant aid of $200 per semester.

Health insurance is required but may be waived if you are covered by a comparable plan.
